Paper

The paper making process is a ritual. Transforming plants, earth and water; adding fragments from books and metals from sites and beating them together creates the psychological epiphany that art making is! The body is totally involved. The pouring, carrying, grinding and throwing are part of the choreography, especially at the scale I work. The process is an ablution. The surface becomes sensory and tactile, created and worked by mind and hand. The images that surface are part of what is contained in the paper.
